Ingredient notes and substitutions
Shrimp – The best type of shrimp to use in this easy shrimp recipe is larger shrimp such as extra-large shrimp or jumbo shrimp. They tend to be more tender than smaller shrimp.
Olive oil – Since this is a fresh salad, I like to use extra-virgin olive oil for its delicate flavor. If it’s not available, regular olive oil or avocado oil can be substituted.
Cilantro – Not everyone enjoys the unique taste of cilantro. Fortunately, if you’re not a fan, you can substitute it with the same amount of parsley.
Garlic – Even though fresh garlic is best, you can substitute it with garlic powder. Use one quarter teaspoon per clove of garlic
How to store leftovers
Leftover cilantro lime shrimp salad can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to three days.
How to make cilantro lime shrimp ahead of time

Recipe variations
- Grilled cilantro lime shrimp salad – instead of steaming the shrimp, marinate them in lime juice, olive oil, and cilantro garlic then grill the shrimp until they are cooked through. Toss them in the dressing and salad greens.
- Use all lemon juice and chopped parsley or a combination of chopped parsley and cilantro with lemon juice.
- Spicy – chop a jalapeno pepper, chili powder or add red pepper flakes to the dressing
- Add any combination of more veggies to the salad such as red onion, black beans, sweet corn, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, and cucumbers. Sprinkle crushed tortilla chips or tortilla strips on top of the salad.
Serving suggestions
Serve this tender shrimp salad with a side of pasta salad or potato salad. These tasty shrimp also make a great addition to a charcuterie board or your favorite salad recipes.

💡Tips for making the best cilantro lime shrimp salad
- Be sure to use the freshest ingredients such as fresh shrimp instead of frozen.
- Let the flavors meld: allow for the salad to sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving it.
- Taste and adjust the dressing to achieve the right balance of flavors. The lime juice should be bright while the cilantro and garlic should not overpower the salad.
Since this salad is made with fresh ingredients, I highly recommend using fresh cilantro. Dried cilantro will not have the same fresh flavor.
Place the cilantro on a cutting board and pinch the stems together; use a sharp knife to chop the stems off. Then fold the bunch in half and use a rocking motion with the knife to chop the cilantro.
