How to make this spicy chicken burger recipe

Prepare the ingredients – Shred or chop the onions, and measure the tamari sauce and spice blend. Preheat your grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.

Step 1. Combine the burger ingredients

Place the ground chicken, shredded onions, and jerk seasoning into a mixing bowl. Use a wooden spoon or your hands to mix everything together.

Step 2. Make the burgers

Form the mixture into two patties and set them aside.

Step 3. Cook the burgers

Once the grill or grill pan is heated, add the chicken burgers; cover the grill and cook the patties for 5 to 6 minutes. Flip the burgers over and cook them for 5 to 6 minutes or longer until the chicken burgers reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees f.

Cooking time may vary depending on your grill.

Ingredient notes & substitutions

The full list of ingredients to make these delicious burgers is above. Below are notes about some of the ingredients along with ideas for substitutes.

Ground chicken – I like to use ground chicken breast to make spicy chicken burgers. You can also use a mix of ground white and dark meat.

Ground chicken can be substituted with ground turkey, pork or beef.

Onion – Shredded onions work the best in these burgers, they add a touch of moisture to lean ground chicken which can be dry. The onions can also be minced, but may not add as much moisture to the patties.

Jerk spice blend – Here is my recipe for homemade jerk spice blend, it takes minutes to make and you can adjust the heat. You can also use a premixed Carribean or Jamaican jerk seasoning.

Serving Suggestions

Spicy chicken burger patties taste great on whole-wheat hamburger buns or a brioche bun topped with red onion, lettuce, a tomato slice, and a side salad, homemade pickles and potato chips.

For low-carb spicy chicken burgers, serve them in a bowl with lettuce, onion, and tomato, or serve them stuffed into lettuce for lettuce wraps.

How to Store Leftovers

Store leftover Jerk Chicken Burgers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to three months.

Reheat them in a pan on top of the stove, in the oven at low heat, or in the microwave.

Freeze your burgers by forming them into patties, arranging them on a parchment-lined baking sheet (uncooked), and placing them in the freezer.

Once the patties are frozen store them in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. We like these Stasher Bags for this.

Thaw the burgers out in the refrigerator overnight and cook them according to the recipe instructions on the grill or in a grill pan.

Spicy Burger Variations

  • Spicy Jerk Burger Sliders are the perfect addition to your next party.  Shape the burgers into 6 to 8 patties and serve them in slider rolls.
  • Turn the burgers into meatballs. Instead of forming chicken patties, form the mixture into 1-inch meatballs and bake or fry them.
  • Add a slice of cheese to the burgers such as provolone, cheddar, or American cheese.

Tips and Questions

Tips

  • If the formed patties are too soft to cook, refrigerate them for at least 30 minutes before cooking them.
  • Stir in a tablespoon or two of bread crumbs for firmer patties.
  • To prevent the burgers from sticking to the grill, use olive oil to coat the grill grates before adding the burgers.
  • If the burgers stick to the grill grates after 5 minutes of cooking, cover the grill and let them cook for a couple of minutes longer before flipping them.

Questions

Can I cook spicy chicken burgers in a skillet on top of the stove?

Yes, you can. Heat a large frying pan over medium to high heat with a tablespoon of oil. Add the patties to the pan, and reduce to medium heat.

Cook the burgers for 5 to 6 minutes on each side until they reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees.

Notes

If the ground chicken mixture is too soft to form into burgers, place the meat in the refrigerator for 15 to 30 minutes to chill the meat which will make it easier to form.

  1. A very flavourful spice and herb combination. I never tasted jerk seasoning but it sounds like a combination of spices and herbs I own so I definitely want to try it. Must be glorious in chicken burgers!

  2. The combination of spices in this burger I bet are to die for. I usually have ground turkey in the freezer so I’ think I’ll use that instead – thanks for the substitution!

  3. These certainly look tasty. I love the blend that you used to flavor them – something I’ve been meaning to try for quite a long time. Time to finally do it! 🙂

  4. So much flavor in these burgers! I usually find chicken/turkey burgers a little too bland, but these are fantastic!

  5. These Jamaican Jerk Burgers are fabulous!! My family loved these , the jerk seasoning was a perfect compliment to the lean meat.. We cooked them on the stove top but next time if the weather is nice we will grill them.
