Prepare: Rinse and dry the arugula, apples, and figs. Slice the apples into wedges and the figs into quarters and set aside. If you are using a baking sheet, line it with parchment paper.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees f, and if you are using homemade dough, roll it out and bake it.

Ingredient notes and substitutions

Fresh figs – Fig season runs from late summer to early fall. If they are out of season, you can use dried figs or fig jam instead.

You can read more about selecting fresh figs and the flavor of figs in this article.

Apples – Any variety of apple can be used to make this recipe. I like to use gala, honey crisp or macintosh apples and sometimes Granny smith apples for a more tart flavor.

You can substitue an apple with pear slices.

Goat Cheese – Feta cheese has a similar tangy flavor to goat cheese and can be substituted with an equal amount of goat cheese.

Arugula – If arugula is too bitter for you, it can easily be substituted with milder-tasting fresh spinach.

Naan – If you don’t have dough or naan, you can use pita bread instead.

How to store leftovers

This recipe tastes best when it’s been freshly made, but if you do have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days. Reheat the flatbread without the arugula in the oven or microwave.

Enjoy apple fig flatbreads with goat cheese for a quick dinner, paired with a simple salad like this kale caesar salad or a Greek chopped salad.

Apple fig flatbread can also be served as an appetizer drizzled with a balsamic vinegar glaze and cut into small pieces or added to charcuterie boards or cheese boards. And don’t forget to serve a glass of chilled rose or pinot noir on the side.

Salty apple fig flatbread – Add one or two strips of thinly sliced uncured prosciutto or chopped bacon to the flatbread to add the perfect balance and a salty contrast to the sweet fruit.

Caramelized onions and apple fig flatbread – Caramelize onions in a pan until they are sweet and spread them on the flatbread instead of olive oil and garlic.

Apple walnut and fig flatbread – Sprinkle chopped walnuts over the flatbread before baking to add a nice crunch and nutty flavor.

Cheese – Change up the cheese and use an equal amount of creamy blue cheese or gorgonzola cheese.

Sweet – Add a drizzle of honey, maple syrup or balsamic vinaigrette or balsamic glaze just before serving to add a sweet touch to the flatbread.

Vegan – Replace the cheese with a cashew-based cheese spread or your favorite vegan cheese spread.

Tips

  • Squeeze a little bit of lemon juice on the apple slices to prevent them from turning brown.
  • Don’t overload the toppings which can lead to a soggy crust.
  • Baking time can vary depending on your crust. It should be golden brown and the cheese should be slightly melted.
Can I make the flatbread in advance and reheat it later?

While it is best to enjoy this flatbread fresh, you can prepare teh toppings in advance and assemble the flatbread just before baking it.

How can I prevent the flatbread from becoming soggy?

Try not to overload the flatbread with toppings and use thinly sliced apples and distribute them evenly.
