Wine school is an evening of tasting, learning and enjoying food and wine.
Last month I attended a local wine tasting (wine school) hosted by Petrock’s Liquors and Jean Edwards Cellars. It was an evening of wine, food, and fun along with a little bit of education and trivia. Jean Edwards Cellars wines are award-winning wines with limited production from some of the most notable vineyards throughout Napa Valley. The food, an amazing four-course dinner, was created by Andrew at Culinary Creations.
Course number 1: A fall salad with apples, lettuce, and brie
The Selected Pairing – Dalla Gasperina Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc. Even though I prefer red wine, I thoroughly enjoyed this wine, it’s refreshing, and fruity (peaches, melon, and citrus) which went well with the salad.
Course number 2: Homemade gnocchi topped with a rich and flavorful vodka sauce
The Selected Pairing – Yates Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine has fruity flavors of blackberries and cherries with just a hint of chocolate, a perfect match for the rich and creamy pasta.
Course number 3: Wiener schnitzel with apple gravy and homemade spaetzle
The Selected Pairing – Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon . Rutherford Cabernet has a rich and velvety texture, and I could taste hints of black cherry and currants. Another perfect match for the combination of flavors happening on this plate.
Course number 4: Tender beef filet topped with raspberry sauce
The Selected Pairing – Stagecoach Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. The Stagecoach Cabernet was my favorite of the evening. I could taste cherry, chocolate, and subtle hints of spice, which enhanced the flavor of the fruity sauce on the beef.
For dessert: Chocolate lava cake
The Selected Pairing – Coopers Cuvee. This is a red blend, and much lighter than the other wines we tasted. I am a coffee with dessert kind of person, but Coopers Cuvee was really good with dessert! It has a hint of berries and a touch of acidity which balanced out the extreme sweetness in the lava cake.
I always enjoy learning about food and wine, and this was a great way to get a little bit of wine education. It was a fun evening spent tasting delicious food, sipping wine and meeting new people. I hope to attend more of these events and share my experiences with you.
