Blood Orange Sangria anytime of the year
Sangria is not just a summer drink, you can sip on it all year long. Grab a pitcher and mix up a batch of this festive red sangria!
Blood Orange Sangria is festive version that I put together with fruit that was sent to me from Melissa’s produce. Halloween is right around the corner, and I thought it would be fun to make up a batch of sangria using some of Melissa’s Freaky Fruit to celebrate.
Thanks to the tropical fruit, this red sangria is naturally sweet, unlike the pre-mixed bottles of sangria with tons of sugar. And don’t you just love the way those rambutens* look in that glass?

Blood Orange Sangria Ingredients
Sangria ingredients are pretty basic, you can play around with the ingredients and come up with your own favorite blend. There are no rules here, mix up a batch and watch it disappear. Here is what you will need to get started:
- Wine – You can choose any type of red wine that you enjoy drinking. We like roja wine from spain, merlot, pinot noir or a red blend.
- Fresh Fruit – Adding any type of fresh fruit enhances the sweetness of the sangria. I was given samples of fruit from Melissa’s Produce to make this recipe, so I used some exotic fruit for this batch of sangria. Traditional sangria uses apples and oranges, but any kind of fruit can be used. This is a great way to use up some of that overripe food that you have hanging around.
- Fresh Squeezed Blood Orange Juice or Orange Juice – An optional addition, we love the way the juice naturally sweetens the sangria. Other fruit juices to use are fresh squeezed lemon, cranberry, or pomegranate.
- Brandy – Brings all of the flavors together. You only need a little bit of brandy, so don’t worry about buying a super high quality brandy for your sangria. If you don’t care for brandy or don’t have any, you can always leave it out.
- Sparkling Water – A little bit of fizz for a finishing touch, and completely optional.
Change it Up
If you don’t have all of the ingredients or just don’t care for one or two of the ingredients, here are a few suggestions for you:
- Replace the red wine, replace it with white such as a pinot grigio, Sauvignon Blanc or a dry Riesling. White wines are especially tasty in the summer. They are cool light and crisp.
- Play around with different fruits, add chopped apples, lemon slices, strawberries, raspberries anything that you like!
- If you don’t have fresh fruit, stir in frozen fruit
- Jazz it up and add fresh herbs such as mint, basil, rosemary or lavendar.
Here’s How to Make Blood Orange Sangria
It only takes a few minutes to put a pitcher of sangria together, here is how to do it:
- Pour the wine into a large glass pitcher
- Add the fruit juice, brandy, fresh fruit and stir
- Chill for an hour or longer for the best flavor; the longer it chills the better it will taste
- Pour your sangria into a wine glass and add a splash of sparkling water and enjoy!
Total Estimated Time To Make Sangria: 10 to 15 minutes plus chilling time.
