Slow cooker Asian pork is a delicious pork recipe that the whole family will love. Pork is marinated overnight and then it slow cooks for several hours resulting in a flavorful meal that’s perfect for busy weeknights.

Here is How To Make Slow Cooked Asian Pork

Prepare the ingredients: Chop the garlic, grate the ginger, measure the liquid ingredients for the marinade.

Step 1. Mix together the tamari sauce, tomato paste, rice wine vinegar, maple syrup, garlic, ginger, and sesame oil in a ceramic or glass bowl.

Step 2. Place the pork into the bowl with the marinade and use a spoon or turn the pork over a few times in the marinade to ensure that it is completely covered – marinate for at least 4 hours up to overnight which is best.

Step 3. Place pork and the marinade into a slow cooker. Cover and cook for 5 to 6 hours on low heat.

Step 4. Once the pork has been cooked through, shred it with two forks or slice it and toss it in the sauce.

Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

Boneless pork roast. The best meat to use to make slow-cooked tender pork is a boneless center rib roast, pork loin, or rib end. These cuts of meat contain enough fat for flavor but are still fairly lean.

You can also use pork shoulder or pork butt if you prefer a cut of pork with more fat content.

Tamari sauce is a Japanese fermented sauce made with soybeans and tastes very similar to soy sauce. It is usually wheat-free and has a more robust flavor.

Substitute tamari sauce with an equal amount of soy sauce or coconut aminos.

Maple syrup is a natural sweetener that is used to sweeten the sauce in this recipe.

Substitute maple syrup with an equal amount of honey, brown rice syrup, or agave nectar.

Fresh ginger can be substituted with 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger.

Serving Suggestions

Serve slow-cooked Asian pork sprinkled with sesame seeds and green onions with a side of your favorite stir-fried vegetables such as a mixture of broccoli, zucchini, bell peppers, Asian slaw, and steamed rice.

Storing and Using Leftovers

This recipe tastes great the next day, and there are so many ways to serve it.

Store leftover Slow cooker Asian BBQ pork in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 days.

Reheat it on top of the stove in a saucepan, in the oven at low (325 to 350) heat or the microwave.

Serve leftovers piled onto your favorite roll topped with coleslaw, stuff it in an egg roll wrapper with sauteed cabbage, wrap it in flour or corn tortillas, add it to a salad or a bowl of rice and diced stir-fried veggies.

Recipe Variations

Spice it up. Add a teaspoon or two of red pepper flakes just before serving.

Slow Cooker Asian Chicken. Replace the pork with a mixture of boneless chicken thighs and boneless chicken breasts. Reduce cooking time to 3 1/2 hours.

Top Tip

  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, mix 1 tablespoon of flour with 2 tablespoons of water. Afer the pork has been removed from the slow cooker, stir the slurry gradually into the sauce until it’s a thick as you like it and then add the shredded pork.

Can I Make this Recipe with Pork Tenderloin?

Yes! Marinate the pork as instructed in the recipe directions. Add the pork tenderloin to the slow cooker with the marinade. Reduce the cooking time to 3 hours.

Pork tenderloins are smaller in weight, if you are only using one that is up to 2 pounds, reduce the marinade by half.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons [tamari sauce]
  • 3 tablespoons [tomato paste]
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup or honey
  • 2 cloves crushed garlic
  • 2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger
  • 2 teaspoons rice wine vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 3- pound boneless pork shoulder or rib end
  • Sesame seeds for sprinkling

Instructions

  • Combine the tamari sauce, rice wine vinegar, tomato paste, garlic, ginger, syrup and sesame oil in a glass or ceramic bowl.
  • Add the pork to the bowl and toss making sure all sides are covered with the marinade. Place the bowl in the refrigerator and marinate for at least 4 hours or overnight
  • Remove the meat from the bowl and add it to the slow cooker; pour the marinade over the top.
  • Cover the slow cooker and cook the pork in the marinade on low for 5 hours.
  • Remove the pork from the slow cooker and shred it with two forks.
  • Add the meat back to the slow cooker and toss it in the sauce and serve.

Notes

Serve slow-cooked Asian pork sprinkled with sesame seeds and green onions with a side of stir-fried vegetables and rice.
Spice it up and add a teaspoon or two of red pepper flakes just before serving.
Replace the pork with boneless chicken breasts and thighs. Reduce cooking time to 3 hours.
