Use a sharp knife to cut off the stem and the root of the onionsĀ
Cut the onions in half from the stem to the root end and remove the skin
Place the onion halves on a cutting board cut side down, and cut the onions into slices
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Once the skillet it add the butter and let it melt, then stir in the olive oil.
Add the onions and sprinkle them with sea salt - reduce heat to medium heat.
Allow the onions to sit undisturbed for about 5 minutes, then stir them and reduce the heat to medium to low.
Continue to cook the onions checking them every 5 minutes or so and giving them a stir each time until they begin to turn brown and have reduced in size. This can take up to 30 to 45 minutes.
