Grilling season is upon us and one of my favorite things to grill is burgers. There are so many creative ways to make burgers with different types of seasonings, toppings, meats and non-meat.
I’m exicted to be participating in #burgermonth for the first time with one of my new spicy burger creation. I think you are going to love this jalapeno burger. It’s tender, juicy and cooked to perfection.
The Ingredients
Good quality beef is a must when you make hamburgers. I like to use grass fed lean ground chuck or sirloin. If you don’t have access to grass-fed, regular ground round or sirloin will work in this recipe too.
To flavor this burger, I add some shredded onion, diced up a jalapeno pepper and added a little bit of taco sauce. In addition to flavor, the onions, peppers and sauce add moisture to the burgers.
This is a brief summary of the ingredients needed to make this spicy jalapeno cheeseburger recipe and a convenient shopping list from my Instacart affiliate link. For a printable recipe card with exact measurements and detailed instructions, scroll down to the recipe card section.

- Make the tomato salsa topping: chop and mix together the tomatoes, garlic, onions and cilantro
- Dice the jalapeno pepper – be sure to wear gloves to protect your hands from the heat of the jalapeno pepper
- Shred the onion – I use a hand grater for this like this stainless steel coarse grater.
- Place the ground beef into a bowl
- Add the jalapeno, shredded onion and sauce and gently combine
- Form the meat into four patties
- Grill the burgers for 10 to 15 minutes
- Top the burgers with cheese cover the grill until it melts
- Serve the burgers with the diced tomato topping and slices of avocado

Recipe Variations
- Just about any type of ground meat will work in this recipe, try substituting the ground beef with chicken, pork or bison.
- For less spice, leave the jalapenos out, or substitute them with 1 tablespoon chopped poblano peppers
- For a low-carb version, serve this burger in a bowl on top of shredded lettuce.
Tips
- Don’t’over mix the beef. This will cause the meat to become rubbery. Gently combine the ingredients and form it into patties.
- Don’t Press the burgers down when cooking them. As tempting as it may be, flip them once and let them cook. When you press down on the burgers, all of the flavorful juices escape and can cause flare ups on the grill.
- Use a meat thermometer. For a perfectly cooked burger, use a meat thermometer to achieve the right degree of doneness.
