Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

Cabbage – I like to use a mix of purple cabbage and green cabbage for a colorful presentation. You can use all green cabbage or all red cabbage as well.

Apples – Crispy gala apples, fuji apples, honey crisp appples and even tart granny smith apples all work well in this apple slaw recipe.

Dried cranberries – These add a nice sweet and tart flavor to this coleslaw recipe. They can be replaced with raisins or can be left out completely.

How to store leftovers

Store leftover apple slaw in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 4 days. If the slaw seems to dry after being stored in the fridge, stir in some yogurt to add some moisture.

Recipe variations

Autumn apple slaw – Add some shaved brussels sprouts and thinly sliced kale to the mixture and a dash of celery seeds.

Spiced apple slaw – Add a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg and ground ginger to the yogurt dressing or spiced flavor.

Apple broccoli slaw – Toss in finely chopped broccoli florets with the cabbage.

Mexican apple slaw – Add a little bit of chili powder, garlic powder, lime juice and diced jalapeno pepper to the dressing for a Mexican inspired slaw.
