Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

The complete list of ingredients to make this chocolate date energy balls recipe is above. Below are notes about some of the ingredients, along with ideas for substitutes.

Medjool Dates – These are the best type of dates to use in this recipe for their sweet taste and chewy texture. They can be substituted with an equal amount of regular dates or figs, but the texture may be differnt.

Unsalted Peanuts – Peanuts just go amazingly well with chocolate, but you can substitute them with almonds or cashews too.

Cacao Powder – This is a less processed version of unsweetened cocoa powder, and therefore has more health benefits. If you don’t have cacao powder, it can be substituted with an equal amount of cocoa powder.

Chocolate energy bites can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to a week or at room temperature for a day or two.

Freeze chocolate energy bites on a cookie sheet in the freezer. Once frozen, remove them from the baking sheet and place them in a sealed container for up to 3 months.

Defrost easy chocolate date balls in the refrigerator overnight and enjoy! They also taste delicious, partially frozen, and even better chopped up on top of your favorite ice cream.

Mixed nut chocolate energy bites – swap the peanuts with any combination of walnuts, cashews, pistachios or a combination of your favorite nuts.

Chocolate energy bites with oats and seeds – Add a tablespoon of rolled oats and chia seeds, hemp seeds, sesame seeds, flax seed, or sunflower seeds to the dough mixture for a thicker texture.

Peanut butter and jelly chocolate energy bites – Add a tablespoon of peanut butter and jelly to the food processor before blending the ingredients.

Protein chocolate energy balls – Add an extra punch of protein with a tablespoon of protein powder.

Chocolate coconut energy balls – Replace the peanuts with an equal amount of unsweetened coconut flakes.

Add-ins– try adding any combination of these into the dough to add different flavors: a pinch of sea salt, a pinch of vanilla extract or almond extract or a tablespoon or two of mini chocolate chips.
