How to Choose the Best Asparagus for Air Frying
Many people like thin asparagus, but for air frying, thicker spears work better. Look for fresh asparagus that’s similar in size and on the thicker side, they stay tender inside and are less likely to dry out.
How to Make the Best Air Fryer Asparagus
- Prep: Rinse and trim the ends of the asparagus and pat them dry with a towel. Chop the garlic cloves and measure the butter. Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees f.
- Melt the butter: Place the butter and garlic or garlic powder to a small saucepan and melt it over medium heat.
- Cook the Asparagus: Arrange the asparagus on an air-fryer tray or basket. Brush the asparagus with half of the melted butter and air-fry for 4 minutes. Shake the basket or tray and cook for a few minutes longer – until asparagus is fork-tender.
Note: cooking time can vary depending on the model of your air fryer. The asparagus will be done when you can easily insert a fork in the spears.

Tips
- Instead of using a knife to trim asparagus, after rinsing it, snap the woody ends off of the asparagus spears by bending the spear at the bottom portion. It will snap exactly where it should at its breaking point; where the stem becomes tough.
- To prevent overcooking air-fried asparagus, keep a close eye on it.
How to Store and Use Leftovers
Store it:
Store leftover asparagus in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4–5 days.
Use it:
- Side dish: This is a delicious spring side dish with grilled chicken, beef, pork or seafood.
- Eggs & breakfast – Chop it up and add to scrambled eggs, omelets, or toss it into a breakfast hash.
- Grain bowls – Add it to rice, quinoa, or farro with a protein and a drizzle of dressing or sauce.
- Pasta toss-in – Slice and stir into warm pasta with olive oil, garlic, and parmesan.
- Salads – Chop and add to a kale Caesar salad or an arugula salad , pasta salad, or even potato salad.
- Flatbread or pizza – Add on top with cheese and bake until warmed through.
- Quick stir-fry – Toss into a skillet with other veggies and a splash of soy sauce or garlic.
- Pesto: Turn your leftover asparagus into pesto sauce. Here’s a recipe for asparagus pesto sauce.

Make it Your Way
- Crispy topping – Sprinkle panko breadcrumbs over the asparagus before air frying for a little crunch.
- Cheesy finish – Add grated parmesan cheese right after cooking so it melts into the warm asparagus.
- Nutty flavor – Toss the spears with chopped almonds or walnuts before cooking for extra texture.
- Savory boost – Stir in chopped cooked bacon for a smoky, salty bite.
- Bright lemon – Add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice to the garlic butter for a lighter flavor.
- Dairy-free option – Skip the butter and toss with olive or avocado oil, garlic, and a splash of lemon.
