    Ingredient substitutions and variations

The complete list of ingredients to make this red white and blue salad recipe is above. Below are notes about some of the ingredients, along with ideas for substitutes.

Fruit – If you aren’t going for the red white and blue look, you can substitute watermelon with an equal amount of cantaloupe or honeydew melon.

If you still want the red white and blue look, substitute the watermelon with red fruits such as strawberries, red grapes or raspberries

Feta cheese – The cheese adds a salty touch to this sweet salad. It can be replaced with an equal amount of goat cheese, gorgonzola cheese or blue cheese crumbles.

Dairy-Free – Leave the cheese out and add white fruit such as sliced banana, apple chunks, pear chunks, or dragon fruit.

Fresh Herbs – Try using a combination of fresh herbs instead of only mint. A few suggestions are basil, cilantro, or parsley.

Citrus – Tart lemon juice brings out the flavor in this fruit salad, try adding a few splashes of lime or orange juice to the salad.

Crunch – Add a little crunch to this salad by topping it with chopped pecans, walnuts or granola.

Can I use dried herbs instead of fresh?

Fresh herbs are the best in this refreshing salad. Dried herbs will not offer the same amount of freshness.

Can I use bottled lemon juice?

Fresh lemon juice is the best choice, but bottled will work in a pinch. Approximately two tablespoons of bottled lemon juice equals the juice of one lemon. Keep in mind the flavor will be different.

Can I add sugar to this salad?

Fruit is naturally sweet and doesn’t need to be added to this salad. However, if you prefer a sweeter taste, you can add a little bit of sugar to taste.
