Burger Month
May is one of my favorite months, the weather is warming up; we are grilling more and BURGERS!
I love burger month! I get to share my burger deliciousness with you and I discover new burger recipes too.
Last year I made a jalapeno cheddar burger, and this year I will be making a few burgers. Today I bring you one of our favorites, the Jersey burger!
What is a Jersey Burger?
When you search for “Jersey burger” online, you will find a few different versions with a common ingredient; pork roll. A New Jersey staple and the feature ingredient in my burger.
I take the Jersey burger roots a step further with the ingredients; I use NJ raised grass fed beef, and have managed to find pork roll made with NJ raised pigs.
What is Pork Roll?
Pork roll is a New Jersey meat that is also known in some parts of the state as Taylor Ham (I’m looking at you Northern NJ). It’s a unique tasting processed smoked pork product. It almost like a sausage, but not really. Some people compare it to spam, but that is sacriledge.
Pork roll is typically served for breakfast as sandwich with a fried egg and American cheese on a kaiser roll, English muffin or a bagel.
You can also enjoy pork roll for lunch and dinner as a sandwich by itself or on top of a burger with cheese and any combination of toppings. I like to keep things fresh and simple, so I add tomatoes lettuce and onions.
Recipe substitutions and tips
Beef
Grass fed beef is not a necessity in this recipe, you can use regular ground beef .
We prefer grass fed beef because it is lean and tender. It also cooks fast, cook it over medium to low heat and keep an eye on it.
You can also use ground turkey or chicken to make this burger too!
Pork Roll
If you don’t have pork roll available, it can easily be substituted with a slice of Canadian bacon.
Cheese
You can use any type of cheese that you like on your burger or leave it off. A typical Jersey burger is topped with gooey American cheese. We prefer cheddar, and have also made them with provolone and swiss.
Topping suggestions
Try topping your Jersey burger off with any combination of theese: fried or caramelized onions, fried egg, hot peppers, roasted peppers, pickles, relish, avocado.
